The direct debit system is the mostly used payment method in e-business in Germany; in Europe it's on second position just after the credit card.
In Europe you differentiate between two different systems; the direct debit authorization commonly used in Germany, and the debit order as it is
common in Switzerland.

With the debit order the account owner deposits a written authorization that the addressee is authorized to collect the money. Due to the complexity of this method it is rarely used for e-Business.
In contrast, the debit authorization is widely-used also in e-business. Here the account owner gives the payment receiver the authorization to collect
money from his account.
The payment is done under reserve; a reversal can for example be due to lack of cover, also the account owner can object the debit.

Country specification:
* High payment security through granting of debit code with a telephone call-back
* Security though address verification
* Risk index on the address
* Optional solvency check at debit code granting

In Germany, the direct debit system (ELV/Direct Debit) has a market share of about 2/3 of all transactions done in e-business. With more than 60 millions
chargeable accounts in Germany, this makes quite a large number of potential customers.

Austria:
In Austria, the payment via direct debit system is still not really well known (market share about 25-30 %); however, our experience shows that this payment method is getting more popular.

Switzerland:
In Switzerland, the direct debit system is not yet important; up to now only the debit order exists. Meantime, ECS-Solution offers a payment method via
debit authorization, but a written authorization of the end customer is mandatory.
